Known as a brown seaweed (marine algae), Undaria pinnatifida grows in the Pacific Ocean.
Because it contains so many vitamins and minerals, including potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, and iodine, it is considered a superfood.
Also rich in fucoidan, mannitol and polyphloroglucinol, U.pinnatifida is an excellent source of alginate and polyphloroglucinol.
The leafy part of the plant (called wakame) as well as the root system (called mekabu) are eaten in Japan.
Mekabu and fucoidan have been the focus of most of the scientific research that has been performed to support the health benefits of U.pinnatifida.
Fucoidans are natural compounds found in brown seaweeds. They are important in protecting brown seaweeds from environmental stressors.
A family of structurally related compounds, fucoidans are sulfated and acetylated in slightly different ways depending on the species of brown algae.
Unique to mekabu U.pinnatifida fucoidans, they are extremely sulfated (approximately 30% sulfates by weight), acetylated, and have a backbone containing predominantly fucose, and about 8% non-sulfur minerals.
U.pinnatifida fucoidan, an extract from mekabu, contributes to the health of stem cells, the immune system, and the gastrointestinal tract[1].
