The amino acid L-Citrulline is classified as a non-essential amino acid. L-Citrulline is converted by your kidneys into L-arginine, an amino acid, and nitric oxide, a gas. These substances are essential for the health of your heart and blood vessels.
They might also help to strengthen your immune system.
The amino acid L-Citrulline increases the generation of nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide aids in the relaxation and function of your arteries, resulting in improved blood flow throughout your body. This could be beneficial in the prevention of certain disorders.
There is some evidence that this supplement may assist patients with high blood pressure to lower their blood pressure [1].
It is also created as a by-product of the reaction catalysed by the enzyme NO synthase from L-arginine. While an amino acid, L-Citrulline is not involved in protein synthesis and is not one of the amino acids that DNA codes for.
Although L-Citrulline cannot be integrated into proteins during their synthesis, it is known to exist as an amino acid in several proteins. Peptidylarginine deiminases (PADs), a family of enzymes that convert the amino acid arginine to citrulline, produce these citrulline residues. Myelin basic protein (MBP), fillagrin, and other histone proteins all include citrulline residues [2].
