WHAT IS BROCCOLI?

Broccoli is considered a superfood because of its many health benefits. As a result of having low calories, and high nutrients and antioxidants, it is an excellent food for keeping humans healthy in a variety of ways.

As with kale, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, bok choy, cabbage, collard greens, rutabaga, and turnips, broccoli is a member of the cruciferous family. As a superfood, broccoli is packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. The antioxidants in broccoli play an important role in the prevention of a variety of diseases.

As a result of normal activities like metabolism, the body produces molecules known as free radicals that are exacerbated by environmental stressors. This is because the presence of reactive oxygen species, also known as free radicals, is hazardous in large numbers. Free radicals can damage cells, causing diseases such as cancer and other serious problems.

Some of these substances can be eliminated by the body, but dietary antioxidants can help fight against them. Broccoli is also regarded as an ideal dietary component for diabetics due to its high-protein content and low sugar content. It has been shown that broccoli flavonoids can protect against cardiovascular disorders, such as atherosclerosis, by inhibiting the levels of LDL cholesterol.

It is recommended to eat steamed broccoli instead of raw broccoli because raw broccoli has antinutrients, while fried broccoli loses most of its bioactive components and antioxidants as a result of the high temperature used. At present, broccoli is an important food and dietary component, but its pharmacological and nutraceutical applications will give it a greater importance in the future [2].
